In the sky
At new Moon, the Moon and Sun lie in nearly the same direction in our sky. The illuminated side faces away from us, so the lunar disc is usually hidden in the Sun's glare. The first visible crescent comes later.

Symbolic meaning
The dark Moon is a blank page — the seed-point of the whole cycle. Energy is low but potent for intention: whatever you name now sets the tone for the weeks ahead. Begin quietly.
The symbolic image is a seed still beneath the soil: a beginning exists before its results can be seen. This phase invites you to listen for what matters and choose a direction. An intention becomes useful when it expresses your own commitment, rather than a demand that circumstances or other people change.
Work with this phase
Choose one intention for this cycle and write why it matters now. Turn it into a small action you can actually take, such as setting aside ten minutes for a neglected project. Note what observable progress would look like, so you can return to it at full Moon and at the next new Moon.

Journal Reflections
Write down one intention and speak it aloud.
What wants to begin in my life? What part of that beginning depends on an action I can take?
Tradition and sources
The symbolism of the eight stages draws on twentieth-century humanistic astrology. These exercises offer a personal way to work with the cycle. Here you can explore both the astronomical observations and the sources of the tradition.
