The image and its symbols

A young man dances alone on the shore, a pentacle in either hand. The two coins are joined, in Waite's phrase, 'by that endless cord which is like the number 8 reversed' — a looping ribbon that binds them into one continuous figure. He wears a tall hat and stands on one foot, mid-step, his whole body given to the rhythm of the movement. Behind him the sea is anything but calm: two ships climb enormous rolling waves, rising and plunging as they sail on. The dancer keeps his poise not by standing still but by moving with everything that moves around him.

Keys

Dancing figure
Balance achieved through movement and rhythm, never through rigidity.
Two pentacles
Competing duties, resources, or options held in play at once.
Endless cord shaped like a figure eight
Continuous flow: the two demands belong to one unbroken cycle.
Ships on high waves
Fortunes rising and falling; commerce and life in constant motion.

Upright meaning

  • adaptability
  • juggling priorities
  • balance in motion
  • flexibility
  • news in writing

Waite gives this card a deliberately double reading. On one hand it is 'a card of gaiety, recreation and its connections' — the very subject of the design, a young man dancing. On the other, he reads it as 'news and messages in writing' and as 'obstacles, agitation, trouble, embroilment.' Both are true at once, and that is the point: life right now is turbulent, and the invitation is to meet the turbulence lightly.

You are likely holding two of something — two jobs, two projects, two bills, two loyalties — and the seas behind you are high. Yet the cord joining the coins is endless: what feels like chaos is really one continuous rhythm of give and take. Handled with humor and flexibility, the demands become a dance rather than a burden. Expect movement in practical matters, letters and messages arriving, plans that shift and need quick adjustment.

Waite adds elsewhere that the troubles here are more imaginary than real. Keep your footing loose, keep your sense of play, and you will ride these waves rather than be swamped by them.

Love

A relationship in a busy season: schedules to juggle, attention divided between love and everything else, perhaps two interests or two commitments pulling at once. The card asks for lightness — keep laughter and shared recreation alive rather than treating the relationship as one more task. Written messages matter now; a note, a text, a letter can carry more weight than you expect. Stay flexible, and the wobble passes.

Work & money

The classic card of juggling: two income streams, competing deadlines, money going out as fast as it comes in. Cash flow rises and falls like the ships on the waves, so budget for motion rather than stillness. Paperwork, contracts, and messages in writing feature strongly — answer them promptly. You can handle the load if you prioritize rhythmically, doing each thing in its turn instead of all things at once.

Spirituality

The dancer's secret is that equilibrium is not a place you reach but a movement you sustain. Spirit here is found in flow: in accepting that gain and loss, effort and rest, follow one another like the loops of the endless cord. Practice being amused rather than alarmed by change. When you stop demanding that life hold still, the agitation itself becomes a kind of music.

Reversed meaning

  • overwhelm
  • forced cheerfulness
  • disorganization
  • financial stress
  • dropped commitments

Reversed, Waite reads 'enforced gaiety' and 'simulated enjoyment' — the dancer still smiling, but now performing. This is the face you keep up while quietly dropping things: pretending the workload is fine, laughing along while the accounts slide, staying busy so you never have to admit you are overwhelmed. In the literal sense Waite adds 'handwriting, composition, letters of exchange' — so paperwork, correspondence, and financial documents come to the fore, and reversed they deserve special care: unanswered letters, muddled records, debts and obligations on paper. The supplementary meanings warn of bad omens born of ignorance — problems growing simply because no one is looking at them squarely. Put the coins down for a moment, tell the truth about what you can carry, and reorganize before the next wave.

Love

Cheerfulness worn as a mask: one or both of you performing happiness while feeling stretched thin. Divided attention leaves the relationship underfed. Stop juggling long enough for an honest conversation — admitting the imbalance is the first step back to real ease.

Work & money

Too many commitments and not enough system: missed deadlines, tangled finances, bills and correspondence piling up unread. Beware of taking on more to avoid facing what is already slipping. Simplify, get the paperwork in order, and renegotiate what you cannot deliver.

Spirituality

Constant busyness can be a way of never landing. If your lightness has become avoidance — motion without presence — the dance is hollow. Let yourself stand still, feel what you have been outrunning, and rebuild your rhythm from honesty rather than performance.

Meditation

Adjust competing demands

Which commitment needs steadiness, and which can change its rhythm today?

Open the full meditation

Yes or no?

It depends

Waite reads it doubly — gaiety on one hand, obstacles and agitation on the other — so the outcome stays in motion.

Advice of the day

Today, aim for rhythm rather than perfection. List what you are actually carrying, do things in turn instead of all at once, and let something small wait until tomorrow without guilt. Answer the message or paperwork you have been postponing. Above all, keep your humor: treat the day's shifting demands as a dance, and your footing will hold.

Reflections

  • Which two things am I really juggling right now — and does one need to be set down?
  • Where am I performing cheerfulness instead of feeling it?
  • What would change if I trusted the ups and downs to be one continuous rhythm?

I move with life's changes and keep my balance through the dance.
