The image and its symbols

A great sun dominates the sky, its chief rays waved and salient by turns, shedding not only light and heat but drops of dew upon the earth. Beneath it, a naked child rides a white horse and displays a red standard — what Waite calls the better symbolism of this card. Behind them runs a wall suggesting an enclosed, walled garden: the sheltered, sensitive life the child is now riding out of, passing on the journey home. The child is humanity made simple again — "a child in the sense of simplicity and innocence in the sense of wisdom" — carrying the banner of restored life into the open day.

Keys

Radiant sun with waved and straight rays
Direct light of conscious spirit, the antithesis of the Moon's reflection.
Naked child
Simplicity regained and innocence that is wisdom; nothing hidden, nothing feared.
White horse
The natural self renewed, carrying the spirit forward in perfect conformity.
Red standard
Life and vitality proclaimed openly, held without strain or concealment.
Garden wall
The sheltered life now outgrown; the child rides out from enclosure into freedom.

Upright meaning

  • happiness
  • attainment
  • warmth
  • openness
  • renewal
  • childlike wisdom

The Sun is the most openly glad card in the deck. Waite's meanings are direct: material happiness, fortunate marriage, contentment. Where the Moon offered reflected light and half-seen shapes, here everything stands in full day. Efforts ripen into visible results, health and energy return, and what you have been building can finally be enjoyed rather than merely maintained. Success under this card is not a lucky accident — it is warmth earned, now radiating outward to the people around you.

The child on the white horse gives the card its deeper note. This is not a return to naivety but an arrival at simplicity on the far side of experience — innocence in the sense of wisdom, as Waite puts it. You are invited to ride out of the walled garden of the guarded, sensitive life and meet the world without armor: to say what you mean, enjoy what you have, and let yourself be seen.

In a reading, the Sun blesses whatever it touches. Commitments flourish, ventures find favor, and honesty pays. If a question has felt murky, expect illumination — the facts come out, and they are kinder than you feared. Receive the good openly; joy shared is joy doubled.

Love

In love, this is one of the finest cards you can draw. Waite names fortunate marriage directly: a relationship can flourish in openness, warmth, and mutual delight, and long-standing bonds may reach a happy new stage — commitment, celebration, or the simple rediscovery of fun together. If you are single, your unguarded, genuine self is exactly what attracts the right person now. Drop the armor, play, and let affection be visible in daylight.

Work & money

Professionally, the Sun promises attainment you can touch: recognition, a successful launch, a goal completed, finances warming after a lean stretch. Material happiness and contentment are Waite's own words — enjoy the rewards rather than immediately raising the bar. Creative work thrives especially, because this light favors what is authentic and clearly expressed. Share credit generously; your success is bright enough that it costs nothing to let others shine too.

Spirituality

Spiritually, the Sun marks the dawning of direct light — consciousness in the spirit, no longer the borrowed glow of concepts and reflections. Waite describes the self-knowing spirit rising above the natural mind, which then leads the whole of one's nature in glad conformity. Practice becomes simple again: gratitude, presence, warmth. You do not need elaborate systems today. Stand in the light you already have, and let it order everything beneath it.

Reversed meaning

  • dimmed brightness
  • delayed rewards
  • low spirits
  • muted celebration
  • clouded confidence

Waite's reversal is unusually gentle: the same, in a lesser sense. The Sun reversed does not turn joy into disaster — it dims the brightness. Happiness is real but partial; success arrives late, smaller than hoped, or shadowed by a mood that will not quite lift. You may struggle to feel pleasure in what is objectively going well, or hold back your natural warmth out of shyness or tiredness. Sometimes the card points to forced cheerfulness — sunshine performed rather than felt. Look for the clouds you are generating yourself: perfectionism, comparison, or the habit of postponing enjoyment until everything is complete. The light is still there behind the overcast. Lower the bar for what counts as a good day, and let modest wins actually land.

Love

The affection is genuine but the sparkle is muted — routine, tiredness, or small disappointments dim what remains a fundamentally warm bond. Do not read dullness as doom. Bring back play deliberately: shared time in the open, honest appreciation, one small celebration. Warmth rekindles quickly here.

Work & money

Success still comes, only slower or slighter than expected — a delayed launch, a smaller raise, praise that feels thinner than the effort deserved. Guard against deflation and against overselling optimism. Consolidate what has worked, adjust timelines, and keep going; the trend remains favorable.

Spirituality

The inner light feels veiled rather than absent — practice turns flat, gratitude effortful. This is a passing overcast, not a lost sun. Return to the simplest forms: a walk in daylight, one honest moment of thanks. Clarity of spirit revives through small, unforced acts.

Meditation

Receive uncomplicated joy

Recall a small moment of vitality that did not require anyone's approval.

Yes or no?

Yes

The Sun is the deck's most unambiguously positive card — happiness and attainment in full daylight.

Advice of the day

Say yes to the day. Step out of whatever walled garden has kept you safe but small — make the call, share the work, accept the invitation. Let yourself enjoy what is already good instead of deferring happiness until the next milestone. Be direct and unguarded in your dealings; honesty is favored and warmth is contagious now. If something has been unclear, seek it in plain daylight — today the truth is friendly.

Reflections

  • What am I already free to enjoy that I keep postponing?
  • Where do I still hide behind the garden wall, and what would riding out look like?
  • What would I do today if I trusted that being fully seen was safe?

I meet the world openly, and I let joy be simple.
